Arkansas August Heat: Keeping Pets Cool & Safe
We all know Arkansas summers can be scorching, and our pets rely on us to help them beat the heat. Whether you’re hiking the Ozarks or just heading to the dog park, here are a few essentials for summer safety:
Top 5 Summer Safety Tips for Pets:
Avoid the Hottest Hours – Walk pets early in the morning or after 7 p.m.
Check the Pavement – If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws.
Offer Shade & Water – Keep fresh, cool water available at all times.
Look for Heatstroke – Signs include heavy panting, drooling, and weakness.
No Pets Left in Cars—Ever! – Even a few minutes can be deadly in Arkansas heat.

Your Pet’s Teeth Are Trying to Tell You Something...
You may have noticed a little doggie “morning breath” lately. But if your pet's mouth smells less than fresh, it's likely more than just bad breath. Here's what your pet can't say out loud:
· Plaque is building up.
· Gums are becoming inflamed.
· Bacteria may be spreading beyond the mouth.
Dental Disease Is Common—And Serious
What starts with tartar and bad breath can eventually lead to painful tooth loss, infections, and serious complications involving the heart, kidneys, and liver.

Back-to-School Blues: Pets Feel the Change Too
The return to school brings a shift in routine—and your pet notices. Pets can experience stress and anxiety when the home suddenly feels quieter and lonelier.
Signs your pet may be struggling:
Whining, barking, or howling after you leave
Destructive chewing or potty accidents
Sudden clinginess or withdrawal
What you can do:
Keep a consistent schedule for meals and walks
Leave interactive toys or safe chews when you're away
Offer extra snuggles and attention in the evenings
Gradually increase alone time to ease the transition
If your pet is showing signs of separation anxiety, we can help with behavior advice, supplements, or medical options tailored to your pet’s needs.
August Pet Holidays You’ll Love
August is National Immunization Awareness Month
This is a great time to double-check your pet’s vaccine records. Routine vaccines protect against deadly (and contagious) diseases like parvo, distemper, feline leukemia, and rabies.

Pet Parent Education: 3 Hidden Signs Your Pet Might Not Be Feeling Well
Many pets hide discomfort or illness until it becomes more serious. Here are three subtle signs to watch for:
Changes in Eating or Drinking Habits – Skipping meals, eating slower, or drinking more than usual could signal dental pain, metabolic issues, or kidney disease.
Behavioral Shifts – Is your normally active pup acting withdrawn or your chill cat suddenly hiding all day? These could be signs of anxiety or discomfort.
Bad Breath – It’s not just about smell! Persistent bad breath is a key sign of dental disease or other internal health problems.
Trust your instincts. If something seems “off,” we’re here to help with exams, diagnostics, and peace of mind.

Exotic Pet Corner: Specialized Summer Care for Unique Companions
At Timber Trails Animal Hospital, we’re proud to offer comprehensive care for exotic pets, including reptiles, birds, and small mammals. These special species have unique needs—especially during Arkansas’s hot and humid August days.
Here are some seasonal tips to keep your exotic pets healthy and thriving:
Temperature Control
Avoid placing enclosures in direct sunlight or near windows. Many exotics are sensitive to temperature shifts and can overheat quickly—even indoors.
Hydration & Humidity
Birds and reptiles need consistent humidity levels and fresh water daily. Mist enclosures regularly and monitor for signs of dehydration.
Watch for Changes in Behavior
Reduced appetite, unusual lethargy, or hiding more than usual can all be signs something’s off. Small mammals may also struggle in the heat—especially rabbits and ferrets.
Keep It Clean
Summer heat accelerates bacterial growth in bedding and enclosures. Make sure habitats are cleaned regularly and thoroughly.
Reminder: We provide routine wellness care, diagnostics, and treatment tailored specifically for exotic species. If your exotic friend hasn’t had an exam in the past year, now is a great time to schedule one.
Farm Animal Focus: Supporting the Health of Your Whole Herd
At Timber Trails Animal Hospital, we proudly offer specialized veterinary services for farm animals—including goats, sheep, chickens, pigs, ducks, rabbits, and more.
Whether you run a small farm, raise backyard livestock, or care for a hobby herd, we’re here to help your animals stay healthy year-round. August heat can bring special challenges—here’s what to keep in mind:
Shade is Essential
All livestock need access to shade during the hottest parts of the day. Use tree lines, tarps, or shelter structures to keep animals comfortable.
Hydration is Critical
Multiple clean, cool water sources should be available and checked frequently—especially for larger groups or animals with limited mobility.
Insect Prevention
Mosquitoes, flies, ticks, and mites are in full swing this time of year. Ask us about safe and effective parasite prevention for all your species.
Know the Signs of Heat Stress:
Panting, decreased appetite, standing alone, or unusual vocalization may mean an animal is in distress. Move them to a shaded, cooler area and monitor closely—or give us a call.
Whether it’s routine care or urgent medical attention, our team is here to support the health and vitality of your entire farm. Call today to schedule a wellness visit or herd check.
