Stars, Stripes, and Wagging Tails: Keeping Pets Safe This July

July Pet Safety Tips from Timber Trails Animal Hospital

Keeping Your Pets Happy and Healthy During the Summer in Arkansas

At Timber Trails Animal Hospital, we love celebrating summer with our clients and their furry family members. July in Arkansas brings sunshine, fun outdoor activities, and, of course, plenty of heat. While you're enjoying barbecues, hikes, and lake days, it's important to remember that summer weather can pose serious risks for pets.

Here are some helpful tips to keep your pets safe, cool, and comfortable this July:

 National Pet Hydration Awareness Month

Did you know pets can become dehydrated just like people — and often faster? July is National Pet Hydration Awareness Month, making it the perfect time to review your pet’s water habits. Some tips:

  • Provide access to clean, fresh water at all times.

  • Bring water with you on walks or road trips.

  • Use pet water fountains to encourage more frequent drinking.

·       Add water to dry kibble or feed wet food in hot weather.

Signs of dehydration in pets include dry gums, sunken eyes, lethargy, and reduced skin elasticity. If you’re concerned your pet may be dehydrated, give us a call.

July is Lost Pet Prevention Month

Fireworks, storms, and open doors during summer gatherings can lead to unexpected pet escapes. Lost Pet Prevention Month is a reminder to take proactive steps to keep your pets safe and secure:

  • Microchip your pet and keep contact information updated.

  • Ensure your pet wears a collar with an ID tag at all times.

  • Double-check fences, gates, and screens to prevent accidental escapes.

  • Take a recent photo of your pet in case they go missing.

If your pet isn’t microchipped yet, we can help — it's quick, affordable, and gives you peace of mind.

Beat the Heat: Know the Signs of Heatstroke

With average July temperatures soaring into the 90s, heatstroke is a real danger for dogs and cats. Watch for symptoms like:

  • Heavy panting or drooling

  • Weakness or lethargy

  • Vomiting or diarrhea

  • Bright red gums or tongue

If you suspect heatstroke, move your pet to a cool place, apply cool (not cold) water to their body, and call us immediately.

Never Leave Pets in a Parked Car

Even a few minutes in a parked car can be fatal. On a 90°F day, the temperature inside a car can reach over 120°F within minutes. If you're out running errands, it's best to leave your pets at home.

Fourth of July Fireworks & Anxiety

Fireworks are a highlight of Independence Day celebrations, but for many pets, they can be a source of overwhelming fear and stress. In fact, more pets go missing on July 4th than any other day of the year in the U.S. due to panic-induced escapes.

Why Pets Fear Fireworks

Pets experience fireworks very differently than humans. Loud, unpredictable noises, flashing lights, and strange smells can trigger a “fight or flight” response in both dogs and cats. Common reactions include:

  • Hiding or trembling

  • Whining or vocalizing

  • Pacing or restlessness

  • Trying to escape or bolt

  • Destructive behavior (chewing, scratching)

 To help your pet cope:

1. Keep Them Indoors
Even if your pet usually enjoys the backyard, bring them inside well before fireworks begin. Close windows and curtains to minimize sound and flashes.

2. Create a “Safe Space”
Set up a cozy area with your pet’s bed, favorite toys, or a crate covered with a blanket to make it feel secure. Playing soft music, white noise, or using a calming pet playlist can help mask the noise.

3. Don’t Leave Them Alone
If possible, stay home with your pet. Your calm presence can help soothe their anxiety. Avoid scolding them for fearful behavior; instead, offer comfort and reassurance.

4. Use Calming Products
There are a variety of calming aids that can help reduce stress:

  • Thundershirts or anxiety wraps that apply gentle pressure

  • Natural supplements or pheromone diffusers like Adaptil or Feliway

  • Over-the-counter calming chews or treats

5. Consider Anti-Anxiety Medications
For pets with severe noise aversion, we recommend scheduling an appointment to discuss prescription options. We can help you find a fast-acting medication that works well for your pet.

6. Ensure Microchip & ID Tags Are Up to Date
In the unfortunate event your pet does escape, a microchip with current contact info drastically increases the chances of a safe return. We can help check or update your pet’s chip if needed.

Check for Fleas, Ticks, and Heartworms

Arkansas summers are peak season for pests. Ensure your pet is protected year-round with flea, tick, and heartworm preventatives. We offer a variety of options, including long-lasting treatments that are easy to administer.

Schedule a Mid-Year Checkup

July is a great time to schedule your pet’s wellness exam. Whether it’s updating vaccines, discussing nutrition, or just making sure your pet is thriving, we’re here to support their health every step of the way.
